Part I: Psychological Transformation and the Dissolution of the Ego: Astrological Approach to Jungian Perspective

Psychological Transformation and the Dissolution of the Ego: A Jungian Perspective

Carl Jung conceptualized psychological transformation as a process involving the dissolution of an outdated identity rather than a literal death.  I believe it to be more of a process of detaching from the ego in ways that help us break our conditioning of family patterns and habits formed in childhood.  To detach does not mean to forget, but it does mean to find a third position within the inner observation that can watch the system of detachment begin taking shape. This transition is frequently accompanied by disorientation, anxiety, emotional instability, diminished motivation, or a sense of alienation from one’s prior life structure.  When we start to lose our attachment to our upbringing, mainly the belief systems we have introjected (swallowed without discernment), we begin our ‘individuated’ journey into ‘know thyself’.  Although such experiences are often interpreted as psychological crises, Jung regarded them as indicators that an existing psychic organization has ceased to be adaptive and is now working toward clarity without the conditioned background hovering.

Astrological correlates to this process would be the necessary individuation of the persona (Ascendant), realizing and working with the soul energy of the (Sun) and the conditioned emotional and feeling responses of the (Moon).

A primary sign of this transition is the destabilization of the persona, understood as the socially constructed identity shaped by cultural expectations, occupational roles, and adaptive strategies. As the persona loses its coherence, previously meaningful goals, routines, and relationships may no longer evoke engagement or significance. Jung interpreted this not as a deficit in character or motivation, but as the breakdown of an internal value system that has exhausted its developmental function.  I see it as a break down in the conditioned responses/reactions we have to our childhood and what we have been taught as a reality.  We now have grown up and can discern our values/conditioning, and make them our own as an individuatied person.  This demands a great deal of inner work and evaluation looking how the astrological chart evolves counter-clockwise from the 1st to the 7th house in our first 14 years of life.
