INTRODUCTION
I want to thank my collaborator and editor, Susanne Hoepfl-Wellenhofer, who has helped me put this all together and added some of her research as well.
Tarot is a study that parallels and connects with astrological and numerological study. For centuries, the three studies have been closely linked and are studied as an integrated whole. I have connected these three studies along with my Jungian, theosophical, and psychological background. I have put together a workbook I
use to engage the ‘intuitive’ understanding after one understands the meanings and correlations with the Major and Minor Arcana of the Tarot. To understand astrology and study at your own pace online, sign into the Intuitive Astrology online course at: https://study.theosophical.org/. If this is your first course at the online school, please create an account first. If you do not have a natal chart, please request one from gwynne.mayer@gmail.com.
I combine my background in Esoteric Wisdom, Theosophy, Clinical Psychology, Jungian Psychology, and the study of Child Development. Therefore a piece of each of these studies is woven into this workbook.
I encourage you to find a tarot deck or two that have the symbology on each card that connects these studies mentioned above. After you have those well-ingrained in your contemplation and memory, then it is beneficial to use intuitive decks (e.g., Osho Zen, Intuitive Tarot, True Heart). However, these may not have the important correlations to astrology, numerology, archetypes, or mythical symbology spelled out in each card.
Tarot, and the questions you ask the Tarot, tell a story, and if you look at it all grammatically, you will see that the Minor Arcana will stand for processing depending on the elements, telling ‘how, when, why’ to the question asked. The Major Arcana (Trumps) will tell the subject and the important area of your concern. Understanding this Tarot grammar will help you immensely in your understanding.
CHOOSING A DECK
It is important to experiment with decks so that you can develop your intuitive function more accurately and predictably. This means that meditation and mindfulness are important in your determining the deck you use.
I will be using the following decks and texts as reference materials:
Thoth Deck: The Thoth Tarot is a deck painted by Lady Frieda Harris instructed by Aleister Crowley. I use this deck frequently as it fits into an archetypal and astrological structure with each card. I find that the art work in each card of the deck refers to archetypal and psychological structures that help lead the ‘reader’ into more specifics regarding the questions asked.
Rider Waite Deck: These vibrant cards, featuring full scenes with figures and symbols, were drawn in 1909 by Pamela Colman Smith under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite.
Textbooks which have helped me to be more practical with my intuition:
- The Tarot Handbook by Angeles Arrien
- Blending Astrology, Numerology and the Tarot by Doris Chase Doane
- Tarot: The Astrological Layout by Lawrence Maerz
DEVELOPING CONSCIOUSNESS THROUGH THE TAROT
(Know Thyself)
We develop our awareness through the study of the symbology and deeper meanings of the Tarot. This helps us develop our higher centers and also helps our soul initiate into higher purposes. The deeper meanings of the Tarot also have to do with indicators in your natal astrological chart.
Upright Cards — Looking at the cards as they are turned face up means that they are manifesting in the present moment what is needed, referring to the answers to questions asked. Consciousness and awareness are present.
Reversed Cards — We must look at reversed draws as awareness which needs to be done at an inner level. This often has to do with our lack of manifesting the positive energy toward realization and demands introspection. Oftentimes the shadow is lurking in our psyche and we have not looked at our projections and hidden parts which are acting out externally both positively and negatively. The shadow is explained well below:
“The shadow goes by many familiar names: the disowned self, the lower self, the dark twin or brother in bible and myth, the double, repressed self, alter ego, id. When we come face-to-face with our darker side, we use metaphors to describe these shadow encounters: meeting our demons, wrestling with the devil, descent to the underworld, dark night of the soul, midlife crisis.” (Connie Zweig, Meeting the Shadow)
Being aware of one’s shadow can also get one in touch with the power and authority one projects onto others. These projections need awareness at an inner level of consciousness. Owning your own shadow will bring you increased awareness and sense of self in powerful ways. A repeated drawing of reversed cards will give you a clue as to how often you project externally rather than internally. The element of the cards will tell you if it is sensing, feeling, energy, or thinking.
IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF IN THIS STUDY
What do you feel is the purpose of the Tarot cards in your life?
What do you want to learn from the Tarot? What are you hoping to gain from this workbook?
Have you developed a method of contemplation and meditation? Explain how you do this.
How do you ask yourself the ‘hard’ questions, to further ‘know thyself’?

MINOR ARCANA
The Elements in the Minor Arcana Cards – (tell the process of feeling, sensing, thought, and energy associated with the question asked.)
Cups — Water = feeling, emotion
When we draw any of the cups, we are looking at the ‘feeling’ sense which feeds the emotions and desire level of our being. Adjusting our meaning to the ‘feeling’ rather than the thinking/energy is important to realize.
Discs/Pentacles — Earth = sensing, material manifestation
When we draw the discs or pentacles, we focus on our ‘senses’ and
‘manifestations in the material world.’ This is often what we can see, touch, smell, and hear in the ‘here and now.’
Swords — Air = intellect, communication, mental proficiency
When we draw any of the swords, we focus on our intellect, our minds, and communication in whichever minor arcana is chosen. This is often what we can see, think, communicate to self and others, and often combined with intuition our of the energy wands.
Wands — Fire = energy, intuition, attention
When we draw any of the wands, we focus on our energy, our intuition, and moving activity. This is often what we can intuit, physically energize, and focus our attention.
Astrological Meaning — The card drawn also matches the planet/sign that occurs in your astrological chart according to which house it is ruled and where it is placed. Reversed cards have elements of inner work not yet manifested for several reasons depending on the placement of the card. The ‘shadow’ is often the culprit in the reversed card.

AN EXAMPLE OF HOW TO FILL IN THE FOLLOWING SECTION:
(Using Emperor, which is my ‘soul’ card as an example) –
The Emperor – Represents which sign or planet? – (Aries) Meaning of the Emperor – (Order, structure, initiation, authority)
My inner mirror of the Emperor – (I sense my authority and conviction in what I say and do.)
My Shadow/Projection of the Emperor – (When I project authority, control, and manipulation onto others whom I deem more knowledgeable than I. Shadow shows up when there are emotional overtones or feelings unrecognized.)
My external or manifested mirror of the Emperor – (I take control of my environment and order/structure it in the way it is most useful to me and my work.)
How does this fit in my astrological chart? (I have Aries in the 9th house of higher learning and esoteric wisdom, each of which has been a starting point on a daily level of study.)
My synthesized meaning? (I will take all of the above meanings and synthesize them into one paragraph to further assimilate their meanings into my consciousness.)
HOW TO APPLY TAROT TO OUR PERSONAL CHART
My layout, daily, is based on the following meaning for each card: 1st card — immediate past 24 hours
2nd card — present situation in the ‘now’
3rd card — the next 24 hours for future reference
(If I draw any trump, it takes priority and often I keep drawing if they are all minor arcana cards (process cards) until I get a trump, which represents the subject of my inquiry.)
My question to the 3 card daily draw Tarot as to how do I present this workbook to the public?
Knight of Discs (elements of sensation/manifestation) – Earth and Leo Trump – The Lovers – Gemini (trumps take precedence in any draw/layout) Four of Swords – Jupiter in Libra
When I look at my chart and apply the above, I will look at where my Knight of Discs falls in my chart – Fire and Earth (combines my Leo Sun and Ascendant with Virgo in my first house stellium (combination of planets), Mars/Mercury/NNode/Neptune (?) è see chart below.
The Lovers — Gemini being in my 10th house of Career
Four of Swords — Where my Jupiter lies in the 11th house configuring my Moon in Libra in the 2nd house.

. My Personality [ ], Soul [ ], . Your Personality Card —- Represents your expression in this lifetime in the outer world which serves your soul’s purpose: your talents, gifts, resources, and how others see you.
Your Soul/Spirit Card — Represents your essence and the deepest eternal core. This symbol represents your internal base of energy and natural abilities. You can draw on these to express your ‘personality’ when you are living your soul’s purpose.
QUESTIONS TO ASK THE CARDS DEPENDING ON THE LAYOUT AND MEANING YOU INFUSE INTO THEM
This is the most important aspect for a tarot reader, to be specific and address the questions specifically. Talent and accuracy are in the specificity and the innate intuitive function practiced after knowledge is attained.
You determine the meaning of a layout based on your own needs before you lay the cards down. The question you ask needs to address specifically a ‘how, why, where, when, what’ question, never a ‘yes or no’. The Celtic Cross is a popular layout which you can find at the end of this workbook. I have put my own meanings into each card before I draw from the deck, making slight changes. I changed #4 to Shadow and Projections working at the inner level. I changed #5 to the current 24 hours.
| Questions:
1) Current situation/question 2) Challenges/Help or Potential 3) What to focus on 4) Shadow and Projections 5) The current 24 hours 6) Near Future 7) Self/Your Power 8) External influences 9) Your hopes/denials/fears 10) Outcome |
(I use this type of layout when doing an in-depth spread and/or reading for clients, putting their natal chart in the center.)

DAILY SPREAD
by Angeles Arrien
This spread is a quick mirror of where you are presently, and where you are going. It indicates the direction in which your soul is currently taking you, how it is your body and external world supporting, the movement, and how your mind is keeping you on or off track (free choice).
This spread can be used for feedback about a major decision; it can indicate the direction of the soul or higher consciousness.

Quality of Energy or Internal Guidance, and Direction |
The shuffle procedure for the Daily Spread is to take the cards and shuffle them, focusing in asking for inner guidance and how you can best use this day; or if you do this Daily Spread in the evening, it’s asking for guidance in what it is that you learned and benefited by during the day.
Whether it is done in the morning or the evening, the shuffle procedure is as follows:
- Take all 78 cards, and shuffle the cards while focusing on the quality of day that you would like to have, or the quality of the day that you have just experienced if you are doing this in the evening.
- Make a very large fan, face-down, and decide which end of the fan is your head and which end is your feet.
- Ask yourself these three questions:
- Where do I feel the strongest sense of who I am between my head and my feet now? Pick out a card in the general area of the fan that corresponds with where you are experiencing the strongest sense of self, between your head and your feet. Put the selected card in position Number 1 face-down.
- Where do I trust my decision-making ability? Select a card from the fan and put that in position Number 2 face-down.
- Between my head and feet, where do I feel the healthiest in my body, or the least tension? Select a card from the fan and put it in position Number 3 face-down.
In this spread, position Number 1 shows how you are being spiritually supported in manifesting either a talent or in moving through a challenged or stuck place; it is your spiritual guidance and inner resource. Position Number 2 reflects your current thinking, your attitude, and beliefs; position Number 3 is a picture of the quality of action or behavior you may manifest regarding health, finances, work, creativity, relationship during that day.
Turn the cards over, beginning with position Number 1, which is the spiritual support that you will have during the day. If a problematic card appears in this position, it indicates that you have spiritual resources and available to move through that challenge today. Position Number 1 is the best position in which to have a problematic card. Then turn over cards Number 2 and 3.
If you do this spread in the morning, it reveals general guidelines for the day, if you do it in the evening it shows how you were assisted during the day.
RELATIONSHIP SPREAD
by Angeles Arrien
The relationship spread can be used any time you want to assess the quality of a relationship that you have either with important friends, family members, colleagues, with deep emotional relationships or even with yourself or a creative project. It’s a spread that is very thorough in that it can show your mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical relationship to another person, concept, or project. It is recommended that this spread not be overused, but used as a guideline, and for guidance to check the quality of relationship that is being experienced.
This spread can be used with two people using one or two decks. When possible, it is more effective to use two decks because a card can be pulled by either or by both persons.

Shuffle Procedure
As the cards are shuffled, each person focuses on the relationship, thinking about the first time they met and reviews all that they have experienced together to the present time. Each person makes four stacks and designates which stack represents his or her 1) mental beliefs, 2) emotional beliefs, 3) spiritual beliefs, and 4) physical expression. Each shuffles his or her mental stack, focusing on the positive and negative thoughts or beliefs about his relationship.
Each makes a fan from the mental stack and selects one card and places it in position 1 and 2. Then each person shuffles the emotional stack, focusing on the positive and negative feelings about the relationship. They each make a fan out of the emotional stacks and select a card and put it in positions 3 and 4. Each person then shuffles the spiritual stack, focusing on the spiritual tests and challenges that the relationship has revealed. From a fan of the spiritual stack, each person selects a card and puts it in position 5 and 6. The same procedure of shuffling and making a fan is followed for the physical stack, this time focusing on the quality of physical expression they extend to each other creatively and sexually in their actions and behaviors with each other. The selected cards are put in position 7 and 8. Finally, the cards are turned over in their numerical order.
THE DIAMOND
By Osho Zen
Shuffle the cards, select 5 cards, and position them as indicated, starting with card 1. As with interpreting any of the cards, the position in which cards are drawn and placed have specific meanings. If you have an intuition that the card is hinting at another meaning, direction, or insight, trust your own intuition and creativity in the reading.
