Gurdjieff: Man No. 1 to Man No. 7 — Levels of Being
In the terminology used here, the word man encompasses seven distinct levels of development, referred to as Man No. 1 through Man No. 7. This classification provides a practical framework for understanding human development and the varying capacities of individuals.
Man No. 7 represents the highest attainable state of human development. Such a person possesses fully realized will, consciousness, a permanent and unified sense of self, individuality, and other qualities often mistakenly attributed to ordinary people. Understanding this level makes it possible to comprehend the gradual stages through which human development may proceed.
Man No. 6 closely approaches Man No. 7, differing only in that certain qualities have not yet become permanent.
Man No. 5 has achieved inner unity and represents a standard that remains largely unattainable for ordinary individuals.
Man No. 4 is a transitional stage. Unlike the lower types, this level is not innate but achieved through intentional effort and structured work. Man No. 4 emerges because of conscious development rather than chance or conventional education.
Man No. 1, Man No. 2, and Man No. 3 constitute what may be described as mechanical humanity. These individuals remain at the level at which they are born:
- Man No. 1 is dominated by the moving and instinctive centers, with physical and habitual functions prevailing over emotional and intellectual ones.
- Man No. 2 is governed primarily by the emotional center and is driven by feelings and personal likes or dislikes.
- Man No. 3 is centered in the intellectual faculty and relies predominantly on abstract reasoning, theories, and logical constructs.
Every person is born as Man No. 1, No. 2, or No. 3. Advancement beyond these stages requires deliberate effort. Man No. 4, having undergone such effort, develops a stable inner orientation rooted in conscious aims and disciplined work. At this stage, the psychic centers begin to function in balance rather than in dominance over one another.
Man No. 5 has reached a crystallized state of being. While this represents a significant achievement, development may proceed correctly or incorrectly. In cases of improper development, further progress becomes impossible without profound inner transformation.
This sevenfold classification clarifies many aspects of human behavior and perception that otherwise remain contradictory. It introduces the principle of relativity as applied to human understanding: ideas, values, and truths appear differently depending on the level of being from which they are perceived.
Knowledge itself corresponds to these levels:
- Man No. 1 acquires knowledge mechanically, through imitation or rote learning.
- Man No. 2 knows primarily what pleases or displeases him emotionally.
- Man No. 3 relies on subjective logic, verbal reasoning, and intellectual systems.
- Man No. 4 begins to move beyond subjectivity, receiving partial insight from higher levels.
- Man No. 5 possesses integrated and unified knowledge.
- Man No. 6 holds complete knowledge that may still be lost.
- Man No. 7 embodies objective knowledge that is permanent and inseparable from being.
Being and knowledge are inseparable. An individual cannot possess knowledge beyond the level of their being. Consequently, Man No. 1, No. 2, or No. 3 will inevitably reinterpret higher knowledge according to their own limited perspective.
