Developing Your Inner Shaman

Shamanism is a practice of intense healing. We will discuss in this lesson how Shamanism is used today, the power and misuse of power that it brings to the forefront, the personal steps in the shamanic journey, the need for grounding of shamanic energy as it comes up in our daily lives, dream work and application of shamanic knowledge through dream retrieval, the work of the underworld and upper world…and all of this leading to our healing through our personal journey. The homework involved in this work is personal in nature, and should only be shared, if indeed you chose to share it, with a partner or me.

Shamanism is an experiential practice; knowledge of spirits and other worlds stems from shamans who journey thither; it cannot be fully comprehended or annotated by theoretical anthropologists, only by those who experience this for themselves. Shamanism is rapidly becoming the most overused and misappropriated word of the late twentieth century. Too many people read a book, attend a workshop and become ‘instant shamans’, or else rework their therapeutic training and add the word “Shamanic”, in the hope that this will align their work with the current fashion. We lose context when we start trying to water down the true meaning of Shamanism.

Shamanism isn’t a therapy, although it may have a therapeutic effect. Psychotherapists of many kinds may wish to append the role of shaman to their list of skills but, although analysts may study client’s dreams and visions, they do Shaman by Marjorie Davis. #1abnot act as shamans, since they do not accompany clients on journeys or journey on their behalf. THIS IS THE WHOLE POINT OF SHAMANISM….THE TRAVELING INTO THE SPIRIT WORLD…WITH OR FOR THE PERSON BEING HEALED….In my personal work, I use the planets to connect me to the spiritual universe, therefore making my journey meaningful and giving me some form of communication technique to bring back. I have experienced this leaving of the body and connecting to planetary energies since I was 29 years old…and I am now in my 70th year…and I cannot, with all honesty, say that the journey can be made totally at will and with full consciousness…I tend to still space out and need grounding.

IMPORTANT: This is for information only and the practices of Shamans. I am not training you to be a shaman. You are getting information so that you can be aware of all the metaphysical healing techniques that exist in our world today. It can be very dangerous to try to train yourself or be trained to be a Shaman. You will find that reading some of this material will be beneficial to you. As Chopra, Kubler Ross, Louise Hay, all practice their healing with the knowledge that they often will succumb to the same illnesses as they are trying to heal…because they are not able to clear the body to perfection.

When Spirit calls us, it totally changes our lives. In past eras, many people have received the help of a shaman but few wished to become one. When the call to become a shaman arises, it is often severely resisted; eventually the candidate submits since resistance becomes life threatening. This seemingly coercive spiritual call should be regarded in the same light as that of an artist who says, ‘I must create or die!’ spiritual conversion works along the same lines. We can look at the example of St. Paul who converted from a Christian-hating Jew to the primary missionary of early Christianity. He heard the voice of God on the Damascus road was stricken blind and lay immobile for three days; he could only be healed when he acknowledged the will of God…In exchange for his healing he had to dedicate his whole life to Spirit.

If we ignore Spirit, we immediately become imbalanced and lose touch with reality. We fall into disease, separation and disharmony. To reconnect with reality, wholeness and harmony we must acknowledge the Spirit of all things. This does not mean becoming a strict religious believer, necessarily, although it might do, but involves recognition that Spirit is reality and the willingness to inhabit that reality.

People at this time are seeking to restore their own spiritual authority. Rather than believing in just one story about spirit and making that their personal myth or ‘story to live by’, they seek their own spiritual connection. Humans hunger for structure and absolutes in which to put their spiritual philosophy…there is none…that will suffice to fulfill that which belongs only to YOU….

Shaman Power and the Misuse of Powershaman-jeanette-sacco-belli

Shamans believe and work with the power of Spirit, which sustains, changes and flows through all thins. This power of Spirit is the vital energy of the universe, it is life. Shamans bring life by reconnecting the broken links of power.

Like Spirit, the word ‘power’ has problematic associations in our language. It bears the connotation of ‘authority’, usually of the dictatorial or censorious kind. I am talking about the power of life, the vital energy of Sprit which runs through all. At no point am I talking about power as a mode of violence or tyranny.

In the Amazonian culture of the Desana Indians it is believed that the quantity of energy or power is fixed and that ‘man must remove what he needs only under certain conditions and must convert this particle of ‘borrowed’ energy in a form that can be reincorporated into the circuit’. By manipulating power, our society has lost its spiritual authenticity and we have cut ourselves off from the reciprocal circuit of Spirit and power. It is no wonder we are spiritually gasping for breath.

Power flows through all of us. It does not belong to us, but is vitality common to all. It comes into us, passes through our being and moves on again. It is always entering and leaving us, like our breath. To speak of possessing power is as ridiculous as owning the air in our lungs. When the pathways of the SPIRIT are blocked, then power cannot flow. Those who have kept the pathways open are often feared by those who have not: the latter consequently often harbor jealousy of any creative skill.

The cosmic web which connects all life as a universal source…is like an electrical grid: each part of it hums with power. Wherever disconnection’s and blockages occur, the power cannot flow. No single being distributes this power: all beings are responsible for keeping it flowing. We each share in it in the same way that everyone swimming in the sea of this power shares in the water: some bodies displace more water than others. It is not apportioned equally, but is available to all.

Those who are spiritually aware are generally perceived to be powerful in the sense of being livelier, more integrated and less unbalanced than others; they may achieve more in a shorter time, be more open to ideas and therefore more resourceful. Being a powerful person does not make you stronger, healthier and most successful than others. This is very important to remember. The more pathways we walk through the worlds, the more power-cables connect us. But to whom more is given, more is required.

Many are drawn to shamanism because it seems to offer them instant empowerment. By walking between the worlds we indeed may enhance our vitality and power, but this is only and incidental effect, that shamanism is not therapy, that a deeper commitment and responsibility are required.

Like Spirit, power is non-dual; it is itself, but it can be misplaced. The shaman’s duty is to reconnect and restore broken power-lines, as well as to remove and re-circuit in appropriate accumulations of power. Such work is not done indiscriminately or without recourse to the cosmic web of power which connects all things. The circumstances surrounding any shamanic action are first investigated in both physical and subtle reality to discover whether a course of action is appropriate.

It is only by consulting the whole universe though the networks of Spirit and power that healing connections can be reestablished. Wherever one part of the cosmic web is healed, power is restored to the whole web, benefiting all.

Shamanic Healing

Jean Achterberg, author of Woman as Healer says that healing is remembering what has been forgotten about connection, and unity and interdependence among all things living and non-living. And she also said in the book, “Soul loss is regarded as the gravest diagnosis in shamanism, being seen as a cause of illness and death. Yet it is not referred to at all in modern Western medical books. It is becoming increasingly clear that what the shaman refers to as soul loss– that is injury to the inviolate core that is the essence of the person’s being–does manifest in despair, immunological damage, cancer, and a host of other very serious disorders. It seems to follow the demise of relationships with loved ones, career, or other significant attachments.”

Our society has associated illness with physical ailments, however, illness occurs at all levels of the psyche and cannot affect one part of the being without affecting other parts. Shamanism has been preserved down the ages because of its ability to provide healing, reconnection and restoration of the physical connected to Spirit. Sometimes the shaman will effect the healing with the aid of her spirits alone, and sometimes with the help of an herbalist. Minor ailments are generally treated in non-shamanic practical ways amongst our population.

With the improvement in health-care throughout the world, the primary function of shamans today generally is to look after the spiritual and subtle reality aspects of healing. In our western society they heal and cure physical ailments by marshalling the emotional and visual triggers in the brain to mobilize the body’s natural immune system to cure illnesses.

Shamanism is not therapy, nor can it be treated like it. By rectifying one imbalance, shamanism brings healing to the whole cosmic web, so that universal, not personal, healing is accomplished. Therapy does not address subtle reality in this way. In addition, shamanic healing is normally accomplished at one time, or over very few sessions: therapy often takes many sessions over many months. Therapy may sometimes be required after shamanic healing in the case of long-established dysfunctions, originating from ABUSIVE BACKGROUNDS…

The qualifications for healing under the principles of Shamanism are:

  1. A shared world-view that makes the diagnosis and naming process possible…being knowledgeable about the realistic professionalism of doctors, psychotherapists, and holistic healers.
  2. Positive personal qualities of the healer that facilitate the client’s recovery. (This is very important…if you as a healer are not positive and do not have a decent concept of SELF, you do not need to be healing others.)
  3. Be knowledgeable about the client expectations of recovery that assist the healing processes.
  4. Specific techniques, material and healing procedures and ethics that is appropriate to the illness and conducive to recovery.

Our part in the healing process is primarily a wish to be well and a willingness to cooperate with our allies to effect such a healing. We should not forget that healing can only take place if the subject wishes it. Surprisingly, some people actively retain illness and energy blockages, usually because it is more convenient or familiar to live in this way; illness can be worn as a badge of care or recognition, energy blockage can be a way of maintaining a selfish dictatorial regime whereby family and friends are subtly manipulated to provide the easiest life style. Imbalance can be so habitual that any healing would be regarded as a threatening change to be resisted at all costs.

Some of the following I want you to use as a check list in your personal life…to send me on a personal/confidential level…In other words, let me know how you are living and if you are addressing the following:

Health is wholeness: whatever is separated, divided or fragmented is unhealthy. The following factors are all considered to be CAUSES OF ILLNESS IN SHAMANISM:

(Only relate to these if you connect to these behaviors more than 50% of the time)

  1. Lack of order or cleanliness
  2. Neglect of proper boundaries
  3. Unethical or manipulative behavior
  4. Neglect of appropriate nutrition and nourishment.
  5. Loss, theft or relinquishing of vital power. (Do you relinquish your power to others who control your life? The following factors are related to imbalances of Spirit and affect our SOUL:
  6. Lack of self-respect
  7. Neglect of spiritual disciplines
  8. Addictive behavior
  9. Neglect of soul enriching food (live foods mostly)
  10. Loss, theft and relinquishing of the SOUL. (As above)

These above qualities should be answered in regard to SELF. Not someone else. As they do to you…How do you participate in the game?

On Dreaming

On DreamingSo when I counsel my patient to pay attention to his dreams, I mean: “Turn back to the most subjective part of yourself to the source of your being, to that point where you are making world history without being aware of it.  Your apparently insoluble difficulty must, it is obvious, remain insoluble, for otherwise you would wear yourself out seeking for remedies of whose ineptitude you are convinced from the start.  Your dreams are an expression of your inner life, and they can show you through what false attitude you have landed yourself in this blind alley.” ~ CG Jung: CW10 paragraph 316

On Projections

On Projections“The existence of projections was gradually recognized when it was found that the process of psychological adaptation was marked by disturbances and defects whose cause appeared to lie in the object. Closer investigation revealed that the ‘cause’ was an unconscious content of the subject, which, because not recognized by him, apparently transferred itself to the object, and there magnified one of its peculiarities to such proportions that it seemed a sufficient cause of the disturbance.”  ~ CG Jung: CW10 paragraph 41

SexualityAs we near the edge of the 2012 vibrations, the energies that are represented by the cosmology of our times, we feel the intensity increasing in our bodies and minds.  This energy has to have some sort of expression, most of which is acted out through our spiritual connection to self and others, often involving our sexuality.  We have many ways of viewing our sexuality as it is interwoven into our spiritual approach to life; authoritatively, secretively, awesomely, childishly and morally, only to mention a few. We cannot discount the way we were introduced to our bodies in the form of sexual expression, nor can we ignore the moral background issues that were present in the family as we were initiated into what would ultimately become our sexual exploration and expression in this life.

This is not an easy subject to embrace and as we move forward into this complicated framing and reframing of sexuality and spirituality, we must open our minds and hearts in a way that centers around our own safe exploration into self/Self.  Learning to hold the tension of opposites within our own psyches is a huge learning curve.  Most often we decide that we cannot do this any longer, hold the yin/yang in our own system, but must have another become part of the outer marriage rather than first having a balance of yin/yang within, finding our own coniunctio, often called the mysterium coniunctio by those with an alchemical mind, via Carl Jung’s works. It is the inner marriage, the inner completion of the male/female, the Sol/Luna (Sun/Moon) within that creates the dynamic of completion in this life, correlating exactly with the creative spiritual experience, in as much as one completes this process. The alchemists describe this coniunctio, the inner marriage in the following passage (excerpted from Jung’s analysis):

“Luna and Sol often appear as White Queen and Red King (note these colors’ corresponding stages of transmutation; the symbol of this relationship is a rose). This relates to their symbolism as the anima, the female principle within a male personality, and the animus, the male principle within a female personality, respectively. (Jung called this aspect a “medium between the ego and the unconscious). This is reminiscent of Rubedo, in which Luna becomes a man, whereas Sol becomes a woman. According to Jung, both aspects are crucial to their corresponding Self, and their realization is achieved through relationships with people of the opposite sex. The alchemical concepts of Sol and Luna seem to be the unconscious projections of the animus and the anima.”

All of this may be a bit heavy to bite off of, but the dynamics in our psyches are ever present even if we don’t fully understand them.  We get our anima (infused into the male) from the feminine and our animus (infused into the female)  from the masculine and those inner images stay with us a lifetime, forming a very integral part of our persona and how we view relationships, especially intimate relationships.  Intimacy can include sexual expression, but not necessarily….still being part of our sexuality.  In-to-me-see!  So who in your life or better yet, your existence as a ‘soul’ have you downloaded into your psyche representing these images of anima or animus?  These aspects definitely color your relationships and your expression within those relationships. We have inner images that literally determine our relationships and those inner images are derived from past soul experiences, and mostly in this lifetime by those who role modeled the opposite sex.  The same images are present no matter what our sexual preferences are.

Our expression of ‘love’ inclusive of our sexual spiritual connection is one that infuses creation and creativity into the ‘one’ holding that love; Teilhard De Chardin put it succinctly in this piece of prose:

“The day will  come when, after harnessing the winds,

The tides, and gravitation, we shall harness for God

The energies of love.  And on that day, for the second time

In the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.”

Can we find a place inside of us that bursts with creativity, with the need to express oneself wholly, fully and without compromise? Will we allow love to flow freely between ourselves and others and learn how to function in our sexual bodies, fully understanding the opposing forces that live within us and have been represented in our outer relationships?  Our creative ‘fires’ are caught up in all of this and in order to spring forward with purpose and passion, one must find the flames that burn within and are able to be ignited by our own doing.

We have been watching the compromising that comes along with free expression of love and sexuality in the polyamorus version of ‘Big Love’, a take off on the polygamous communities of the FLDS, Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  Why has this received so much national attention, when we know that there are multiple affairs, bigamy in nature, and rampant polyamory going on in our society, but kept under wraps.  How about looking at the polyamory that is in fantasy if not in reality, in each and every one of us, either through some repressed guilty expression or full out expression as in this HBO presentation or by those of the multiple Pagan communities?  What if our nature is polyamorous as represented in mythology, in the Bible, and in a multitude of other literature, not to mention other cultures? We, indeed, have choices to create a monogamous life style or one which includes our polyamorous nature.  Have we lost you here?  Hopefully you will see how this works through our society and into the morality issues that surround us in our everyday life. We may experience all of these things that are mentioned, but keep most of it to our own private thoughts, or go to the movies and live it out in the fantasy world represented by the film industries.  Sometimes we have difficulty seeing the difference between the real and the other dimensions that represent us.  Is there a difference?

We are looking for love, acceptance, excitement, passion, pleasure and free expression in our sexual/spiritual experience or we shut down completely.  It is a choice, to be complete or incomplete and some of us have made that choice willingly and happily.  This treatise is to explore the needs of those of us who are still looking for an ecstatic connection to our passion for life, love and the pursuit of happiness.  So let’s keep our judgments aside and move toward understanding the roots of our being, the multi-dimensionality in which we all exist.  Are we living in those dimensions as eternal souls or do we just have this one life, this one existence to prove ourselves?  We must learn to see ourselves in other parallel worlds, in other dimensions of time and space, to encounter that purpose that we all hold inside, to become spiritual beings inhabiting the body, mind and soul of ‘the now’.

Yin YangOur sexuality is so much a part of us in every way; it is entangled in our spiritual, mental and physical growth and our approach to this says everything about the way we enter the advancing energies of 2012.  We have deliberated how to approach this subject of sexuality for many years; we can hardly advance forward if we are to be caught up in technical discussions revolving around our sexuality and the changes that are moving us toward a more androgynous level of understanding.  This is not a technical endeavor we are bringing forth here, and it is not to exclude this matter, so we will leave this up to you and your intimate connections to self to discern where you stand with an intense study of sexuality as we move toward oneness and the affects advancement in consciousness has on one’s sexual nature.  We are on a spiritual journey and much of our spiritual connection is propelled by our sexuality and its intensity as a true kundalini force in nature. Changes are happening in a intense whirlwind of energies invading our ‘here and now’ reality even more so the multi dimensional world in which we live. As we move into our androgynous nature, owning the anima and animus within, excluding the struggle toward gender identification, at least in the spiritual connection to our higher source, we have to understand that we are transforming our energies in every sense of the word, and only in becoming more conscious can we really attain the true meaning of our own sexual natures.

Androgyny, as we apply this term here,  is a true integration of our femininity/masculinity and is not concerned as to role playing within relationships so please understand that if one is still hung up on who, what and why about their sexual nature, that is okay, but not the focus here.   To get to a level of transformation and transcendence, one must come to terms with one’s own feminine/masculine body within.

Professor Sandra Bems’ work on androgyny preceded the current widespread use of the term as a gender identity, and uses the term more in terms of character traits than core gender identity. She considers an androgynous balance of traits to be desirable, stating that those who are able to draw on both traditionally masculine and feminine emotions and behaviors are best able to cope with life’s challenges in a well-rounded way.

From Wikipedia in regards to human sexuality:

“Human sexuality is not simply imposed by instinct or stereotypical conducts, as it happens in animals, but it is influenced both by superior mental activity and by social, cultural, educational and normative characteristics of those places where the subjects grow up and their personality develops. Consequently, the analysis of sexual sphere must be based on the convergence of several lines of development such as affectivity, emotions and relations”.

And now as we have some background of where we might go with this information, let’s give ourselves permission to really go into depth into our own sexual nature and clear out the cob webs shall we? Cob webs meaning: value judgments blocked sexual energies, past psychological factors, relationship baggage.  We aren’t going there, and maybe you can understand that we need to transform that energy privately and thoroughly on our own time.  We all have problems, blocks, negatives, so how about coming out of that space and seeing our future and multidimensional selves as pure sexual beings in a continuous movement toward becoming ONE with self/Self and others, helping to heal the planet and others around us in a way that is lasting and transformative.

We have been discussing the energetic of 2012 and how the planet is speeding up its own energies aligning itself with the galaxies and we are focusing on how this is affecting us as our lives seem to be folding in on themselves.  Our dreams are becoming more intensive, our interactions with others are intensified and it seem we are all being bombarded from the personal to the political arena…it is all part of the soup we are in, as Carl Jung use to say. We in the psychological field are definitely skewed in our frame of reference as we see person after person struggle in this area, not to mention those peers of ours in the healing professions try to gain balance and not get tipped over in this topsy-turvy world.

There is a general mandate out in the cosmos to take care of our own bodies, minds and spirits as we move toward our transcendent lives on this planet which is also making its transitions; global warming, planetary changes, zero-point realities, a la Gregg Braden and even more so a global economy that is moving the USA away from isolationism and empiricism at the same time.

ShadowsAs we move toward change and complete our own personal ascension into the Soul and Spirit that we are, understanding the nature of the ‘work’ that must be done to make that leap,  we must come to terms with the unknowns, the ‘shadows’ that live in our personal unconscious.  These are parts of the self that are seen only briefly with full emotional output, as a projection toward others, judgments, emotional angst, incomplete parts of our own darkness, all of which reveals itself only in the periphery of our reflection toward self.  If these shadows are not seen for what they are, they move into a more global and collective shadow which is then manifested by larger areas of the population.  How many of you have watched the news, seen hate crimes, terrorists, destruction and wondered how this could happen?  It happens when we no longer are compassionate, spiritual beings, understanding the nature of things we repress and living them out response ably.

“We carry our past with us, to wit, the primitive and inferior man with his desires and emotions, and it is only with an enormous effort that we can detach ourselves from this burden. If it comes to a neurosis, we invariably have to deal with a considerably intensified shadow. And if such a person wants to be cured it is necessary to find a way in which his conscious personality and his shadow can live together.” Carl Jung: CW:11, p. 12

The old beliefs, the old lies, the old rigidity reeks havoc on our bodies. By taking inventory on these bodily manifestations, we might be able to build a new and more open body for our soul’s infusion into self. We come to this planet through an intense energy of light vibration and as we incarnate and get closer to the earth, the magnetic field gets dense; the thought forms manifest. Lo and behold! we land on this earth in physical form, taking on, within our bodies all the beliefs and grounded interactions that are on this planet; all the paradigms, the belief systems, the families, the personalities, the governmental and cultural structures, the place which houses our bodies…we take all of it into our body ..and then we begin processing this persona in this life. Our body holds all of what we are and what we are to become, and reveals itself by our own relationship to it. This body awareness is essential in understanding the nature of things we need to change as we enter the Gateways of 2012.

We are always in a state of learning, feeling, sensing, intuiting, that which our body is telling us. What is your body telling you? In our work with others, therapeutically, we develop dialogues within the body, which, eventually will be exemplified on this site, but until then, let’s look at the psychological processes by which we learn more about our shadows as they are reflected in our bodies, the buried periphery in our personal unconscious.

We are going to go over some general meanings regarding body armor and body shadow energy. The SHADOW is that part of you which is reflected in your relationships, projections, high energy involvements, and seems to always slip past your energy boundaries into your body when not processed. The body creates the actual MIRROR of your body as a temple of worship so that you have to pay attention and maintain some vigilant disciplines about the care and nurturing of your own body. After we go through these general meanings of character armor, much of which we learned through the study of Wilhelm Reich, Fritz Perls, and Alexander Lowen, but mostly just through my psychic intuition, and a alchemical approach to all of the leading psychologies, we will see how relevant this is to the changes that need to be made at a personal and highly intimate level. We manifest in our bodies the following symptoms so that we can learn how to deal with this dense planet and get past the process in order to become more aware and conscious, as well as ‘response able’ to our authenticity.

The head is the part of us that is caught up in logos, thinking, intellect, analyzing and many of us operate totally from our heads trying to make sense of all that comes to us and from us. Even as I am writing this, my head is using up all its oxygenation and I am not focusing on breathing into my head to prevent headaches…too much energy focused in one area for any length of time, will create stagnation in that area, due to no oxygen. Headaches and more head injuries create a need to get out of our minds and into our bodies..

The speech mechanisms in the throat and all around the chest area can create such blocks as laryngitis, polyps, our children who have speech defects because we have not learned to communicate our truths. Yes, even our children manifest our ‘denial of body’. Sometimes the lessons have to be given with a 2 X 4 over the head in the form of our progeny.

Our hearts get blocked, big time, due to our inability to love self, others, without limitation, judgment, and willingness to receive love and nurturance. Many people think that it is a matter of action of loving. I see it as a shutting down to receiving love unconditionally. Our inability to receive touch, care, love….all of this shuts the heart down to a screeching halt. This is reflected in pains on the left side of the body as well as the lack of circulation and mobility at that level.

Our stomachs are loaded with the unexpressed anger; the abandonment of the mother or the unavailability of the mother/nurturance. There is lactose intolerance, because we were fed with attachment and with the toxicity of the mother’s attachment or abandoning, both creating the same polarity. The over mothering is just as abandoning of the child as the mother who leaves her child on the doorstep of the ‘other’.

Our pelvises and sexual chakras are the seat of kundalini, and shock us into action through frustration, through charisma, through magnetic chemistry between us and others. The planet is going through major shifts of sexual energy and how we use it. This energy is pristine and we put thoughts/feelings/emotional dramas on this energy so that we can source our more intense selves. We refuse to own our male/female in an authentic manner. We don’t want to look in the face of our husbands, wives, and lovers, and say… He/She is ME ..we are  having a sexual relationship with ourselves,  so we manifest all kinds of problems in our genitalia.

We have mentioned a few of the areas that hold our shadows, parts of self that we project on others ‘to hold’ until such time as we can hold the energy as self, consciously and fully, becoming healthy physically so that we can live longer more fulfilled lives.

Becoming fully conscious of our shadows requires other disciplines that are necessary so that we don’t bury ourselves in our own conscious self. Jung once warned:

“If you imagine someone who is brave enough to withdraw all his projections, then you get an individual who is conscious of a pretty thick shadow. Such a man has saddled himself with new problems and conflicts. He has become a serious problem to himself, as he is now unable to say that they do this or that, they are wrong, and they must be fought against. He lives in the “House of the Gathering.” Such a man knows that whatever is wrong in the world is in himself, and if he only learns to deal with his own shadow he has done something real for the world. He has succeeded in shouldering at least an infinitesimal part of the gigantic, unsolved social problems of our day.” Carl Jung, CW11: p. 140.

Gateways to 2012The coming of 2012 has long been discussed regarding the Mayan cultures, scientists, psychologists, philosophers and metaphysicians and there are many thoughts and ideas floating around out in the cosmos ready to land on willing ears to hear and willing brains to understand.  The point of this series is to try to explain in layman terms what some of the theories are regarding 2012 and intersperse those ideas with some of my own, coming from a background in Jungian and Gestalt studies, metaphysics and spiritual work, as well as many years in the field of education. For over forty years, I have been privileged to see over 3000 people, all of whom are open-minded, thinking out of the box, many of whom have shared their personal experiences of expansion and evolvement at this important time in space, adjusting to the energies that infuse this planet from an unknown source to many or from a GOD source, depending on one’s belief systems.  To be able to read this series will mean that you must open your mind to some other thinking and maybe consider other realities.  If this will conflict with your current faith and your beliefs, then please go no further as this series is a layman’s study meant to connect us to the meanings assigned to December 21, 2012.

What is there about 2012 that should interest you?

The myth and reality of 2012 derives from the Mayan civilization as we look once again at its history and culture. Archaeological records show that the first Maya ‘suddenly’ appeared over a millennium and a half ago, in the remote areas of what is today Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula; Guatemala and parts of Honduras and Belize. (There are theories regarding this phenomenon that suggest the Mayans came from the ‘big flood’ when the earth was separated and the land connecting to Egypt became parts of the South American/Middle American continents, mainly due to the similarities of cosmological accuracies, pyramid building and artifacts found during this millennium.  The Mayans appear to have arrived with an advanced sense of technology already in place, rather than evolving their technology over a long period of time.  These facts seem to support the Mayans splitting from another advanced civilization. Whatever the Mayans achieved in their new land, they abandoned in the 9th century and therefore left a complete mystery and riddle as to the reason for this abandonment.

What we know about them is the tremendous language and artifacts that were left behind with advanced cosmology, the Mayan calendar being a highly sophisticated study of cosmic cycles and time calculations. Michael Coe, an expert in Mayan cosmology tells us that the system has not slipped one day in over 25 centuries.  The 5,000 year old Mayan calendar appears to track something even more surprising: the rare celestial alignment of our solar system, our sun, and our planet with the center of our galaxy—an even that will not happen again for another 26,000 years.  According to the Mayan priests, records indicate the last Great Cycle began in August of 3114 B.C.E. —the approximate time of the first Egyptian hieroglyphics—and ends in the near future, in the year 2012 C.E.  Specifically, the cycle ends on December 21, 2012, when our sun will move into direct alignment with the equator of the Milky Way galaxy.  So that is enough information to work with as to how all of this will affect us, studying the different ideas about this from different angles. Several well known authors have some of their own ideas.

Gregg Braden focuses on what he calls a ‘pole reversal’, basing this on the historical, scientific material:     “When we think of things that are certain in life, we tend to count the magnetic fields of our planet among those certainties.  For as long as anyone living today can remember, every time we have looked at the needle of a compass, the tip of the needle has pointed in the same direction—‘up there,’ toward the magnetic north pole of the Earth.  And while we tend to think of Earth’s north and south poles as a sure thing; the reality is that our planet’s magnetism is anything but certain.”

We know for example, that every once in a while something truly mind-boggling, almost unthinkable, happens.   For reasons that are still not fully understood, our familiar north and south poles trade places—the magnetic field of the Earth does a complete flip-flop.  Although polar reversals are rare in the history of civilizations, the geologic record shows that they happen routinely in terms of Earth’s history.  Magnetic reversals have already happened 171 times in the last 76 million years, with at least 14 of those reversals occurring in the last 4.5 million years alone.

And while they are definitely cyclic, the reversals appear to vary in time, making the time of the next one an uncertainty.  These are symptoms, however, that precede the flip-flops, such as abrupt changes in weather patterns and a rapid weakening of the planet’s magnetic field—both of which are happening right now.  It is the appearance of these symptoms today, and the fact that we are ‘overdue’ for a polar shift, that has led a growing number of mainstream scientist to suggest that we are in the early stages of such a reversal.”

In July 2004, the New York Times posted, in their science section, what a magnetic reversal is and what might be the results of such a thing, stating: “The collapse of the Earth’s magnetic field, which both guards the planet and guides many of its creatures, appears to have started in earnest 150 years ago.” There are many scientists who have measured the electromagnetic field through the years and have watched it decline over 7%.

What does this mean to us as individuals?

My studies have brought me to the conclusion that ‘as above, so below’ stands to be tested in our own bodies/minds/souls and that the electromagnetic field which is present at all times is helping recalibrate our bodies to handle this magnetic shift.  We are receiving help through the unconscious, the collective unconscious and various information systems open to us.  To be simply put, we are receiving dreams, ideas, paradigm shifts, and upgrades, so to speak all the time, but mostly in the times of rest and sleep when we are open to adjustments.  More will be said about this as we move on through this series, being very specific about how and why we must pay attention to the ‘changes going on in our universe from the largest of events to the smallest’.  During this time it is best to pay attention to rest, diet and environment so that you have the connection you need to good health and attitude.  You will see people around you who are not making needed changes and therefore are suffering greatly and that saddens us to see as the universe and time moves forward.  What keeps us stuck in our rigidity and our belief systems that keep us from accepting change, opening our minds and understanding the more basic practices of love and compassion as those who came before, our greatest teachers, Jesus Christ, Buddha, Mohammed, Krishna and others who have set the standards of service, love and ‘do unto others’ as a ‘golden rule’.

Urobos ZodiacWe oftentimes get our energy plugged up within a relationship to the other even though we realize the other is US. Our energy becomes short circuited or contained, when in fact, it would help us to move through our erotic/eros nature to come to a point of release of that same energy. The whole universe, the energy of each part of the body moves both internally and externally, subjectively and objectively, contracting and expanding, inhaling and exhaling, and pulsating inward to the nucleus of the inner psyche and outward to all other selves and dimensions. The freer the energy movement becomes, in keeping with its own integrity and cohesion, the more intense becomes the life and the fuller becomes the consciousness, hence the full living within and between multidimensional comprehension.

More recently, we have been looking at dialogical relationships which is a coined term by two authors John Scudder and Anne Bishop in a small book called Beyond Friendship and Eros.

Giving us new paradigms to consider, they say:

“We will explore possible nontraditional personal relationships between men and women and give concrete examples of how some of these possibilities have found fulfillment. We will ask our readers to entertain the possibility of developing new relationships with persons to entertain the possibility of developing new relationships with persons of the opposite sex rather than the traditional ones based on sex and romance. The primary question this new direction raises is not, “Are they friends or lovers?’ but ” Is their relationships personal or impersonal?” Relationships that focus on fitting the designated ways of society are often impersonal—even when they are called personal relationships such as friends or lovers. In personal relationships, as we will show, persons respond to each other as they are present to each other and in ways that presence calls forth, rather than by following the DICTATES OF SOCIETAL ROLES. When people attempt to relate to each other personally within the confines of societal structures, they often find their personal relationships restricted and truncated by these structures. Even those who initially do not feel their relationship restricted by traditional structures often look to their personal relationship as it matures, rather than to society, to define the meaning of that relationship.”

The authors go on to explain that many artists …i.e. CS Lewis and Ralph W Emerson engaged with someone who also delved into this magical dialogical type of relationship.

Examples of how those contrast:

“New lovers, traditionally, have assumed that their relationship is unique. It is well established in the literature of love that this feeling of uniqueness is characteristic of new love. New lovers proudly proclaim that their love is like no other love. Those who experience love that is not culturally recognized are not given to such proclamation. They fear that they are alone (MOI) and fervently hope that others experience what they are experiencing. They are uncertain about the meaning of their relationship and are reaching out for help in making sense of its meaning.”

Dialogical Love and Abundant Being are the concepts we will explore here:

“Dialogical love is first experienced as abundant being that occurs when two people are together in a way that enhances both of them. This abundant being is rarely experienced directly. It is initially recognized by its accompanying sense of ecstatic fulfillment. Later when the couple reflect on their experience, (and the authors point out that this through the years …studied only those relationships that went beyond three or four years most of them 20 years of duration)they usually felt a sense of “Wow! I was completely there in that conversation. My horizons were expanded, and I felt myself lifted into another level of being. time just flew! In truth, I was unaware of the passage of time.’

Abundant being alters the meaning of time by affirming the worth of moments shared together. Time lived well together seems to fly. Often when we are engrossed in thought and conversation on a long trip, time first appears when the city limit sign announces that we are at our destination. Then one of us will comment, “Do you mean we’ve been driving for hours?” Time vanishes when shared love and mutual pursuits become one.

Abundant being doesn’t come according to the PREDICTABLE schedules of clock time. When it comes, you need flexible time to seize the moment. Relationships that foster abundant being require only not only much time together but time that’s highly flexible, allowing a great deal of freedom to respond and cultivate possibilities that appear. The need for flexible time makes cultivation of relationships of dialogical love difficult for those who are not married to each other. But the abundant being that appears with such rich relationships makes wrestling with time constraints well worth the effort. When time vanishes for a couple who are living in the fullness of time, it reappears when the demands of schedule time intervene. There is a sense in which the joy of time together is accompanied by a clock ticking in the background.”

Exploring this dialogical concept of relationships, we want to explore more fully the Eros/Psyche myth and how it applies to this present change in paradigms, altering relationships from what they have been into where they are now. We all have erotic natures which we tend to split off from our psyche, however we are coming to a point in our lives, where this EROS must fit with our own PSYCHology and move forward, unblocking the energy that will fulfill us ultimately as ONE.

The Myth of Us – Eros and Psyche

“It is wrong to think that Love comes from long companionship or persevering courtship. Love is the offspring of a spiritual affinity, and unless that affinity is created IN A MOMENT, it will not be created in years or even generations.” ~ Kahlil Gibran, from “The Broken Wings”

We are discussing, in depth and detail, the realistic, third dimensional relationship to the myth of Eros and Psyche, as well as the practicality of bringing the myths into reality, the reality of you and me, the US. In a relationship there is only ONE of US; the ability to see this demands an understanding of the beauty and the beast that lies within. We bring people into our lives to show us the way, whether it be within relationships, acquaintances, or significant others. There are many myths that represent the story of relationships, however, we are going to delve into the myth of Eros and Psyche and apply it to our reality here and now.

The story of Eros and Psyche is complex, but to simplify it, we will tell the myth in its simplicity and apply some of the concepts in later writings always to return to the basic premise of this mythological magical relationship between Eros/Cupid and Psyche. It is the story about how love and soul unite and spirituality and physicality become ONE.

Psyche was the daughter of a King and one of three daughters, who was beautiful, adored and mortal, so beautiful that she was beginning to oust the immortal alchemical goddess, Aphrodite. Aphrodite, of course, would have none of this, being the Goddess of Love and Beauty, so she sent her son Eros to make Psyche fall in love with the ugliest man in the world and marry him here enters the beast. Eros, after seeing Psyche, fell in love with her, pricked himself with his arrow and fell in love with her immediately erased all he had done to her and went away. Aphrodite, realizing that her son had not carried out his orders, cast her own spell on Psyche. Psyche was taken from her people, destined to marry a monster, leaving her people in distress and her parents wailing in the face of the FATES. The FATES had told her parents to take her to a mountain and leave her to the Beast. Eros, from this point on in the story, always stayed hidden, yet, at the same time, helped Psyche and always intervened on her behalf, unbeknownst to her. He remained in her life as the tone of Eros, the voice of mystical and spiritual merging, yet she did not know this and felt she was under the spells of Aphrodite, destined to be married to the monster Beast.

Psyche was able to glance at Eros, thinking he was the Beast, and at that moment, saw his godliness and his beauty and fell deeply in love with him. She accidentally spilled the oil from her oil lamp on him and he awoke to find her in deep grief and sorrow. Seeing her in grief, he flew out the window and for the first time she felt truly abandoned.

From this point on, Aphrodite realizes that there are tasks and tortures that Psyche needs to go through as she will not relinquish her son, Eros, to this contestant for the most beautiful in the world.

Through the story, there are tasks and Herculean types of maneuvers that Psyche must prove to win the love of Eros and merge him as a husband/lover. Zeus, the God of Olympus, finally bestowed upon these two his good graces; giving Psyche the drink of the gods, ambrosia, to create her as an immortal so that she could marry Eros and unite with him on Olympus. This is not the end of their struggles to attain an enchanted life, however, for our purposes, it is where we want to begin our more realistic story of relationships and the struggle between Eros and Psyche within.
